A KITAP (permanent stay permit) is built on the premise of residence in Indonesia, and prolonged absence puts it at risk. Two mechanisms matter:

• The re-entry permit. A KITAP holder travels on a multi-year re-entry permit (MERP). Leave Indonesia and let that re-entry permit lapse while abroad, and the KITAP itself can be voided — the permit does not survive an invalid re-entry document.
• Continuous absence. Immigration regulation treats extended continuous absence from Indonesia as grounds for a permanent stay permit to lapse, regardless of paperwork. A KITAP is not a citizenship substitute that can be parked indefinitely from overseas.

So a KITAP holder who needs to spend, say, 200+ days a year in another country for family or business reasons is not automatically in breach — what matters is that the re-entry permit remains valid, absences are broken by returns, and the holder can still credibly claim Indonesian residence. A holder planning a multi-year relocation abroad, by contrast, faces a real choice: maintain deliberate returns and paperwork, or cancel the KITAP properly (see our EPO FAQ) and re-apply on eventual return.

Before any long absence, check the expiry of your re-entry permit against your travel plans, and take advice if the absence will be measured in years rather than months. Rebuilding immigration status from scratch is far more expensive than maintaining it.
