Frequently Asked Questions: #kitas-after-employment-ends

A work KITAS is tied to its sponsor — the employing company. When the employment relationship ends, so does the basis of the stay permit:

  • The employer, as sponsor, is obliged to report the termination and cancel the work authorisation and KITAS
  • The former employee’s lawful stay ends with the cancellation; the window to depart or change status is short and should be treated as a matter of days and weeks, not months
  • Family members holding dependent KITAS lose their status alongside the principal, since their permits derive from the sponsored worker’s

The realistic options for someone who wants to stay in Indonesia after losing or leaving a job:

  • A new employer — a fresh work authorisation (RPTKA ratification) and KITAS under the new sponsor; timing the transition so status never lapses is the hard part
  • Own company — establishing a PMA company and qualifying for an investor KITAS
  • Family routes — a spouse-sponsored permit where the spouse is Indonesian
  • Non-working permits — retirement, second-home or remote-worker visas for those who qualify
  • Orderly departure — EPO processing and a clean exit, preserving the ability to return later

The most damaging mistake is inaction: staying on after cancellation in the hope something turns up. Overstay penalties accrue per day, and enforcement leads to deportation and blacklisting — which forecloses the very options listed above.

If your employment is ending, contact us before the last working day. Sequencing the cancellation and the replacement status correctly is usually possible; repairing a lapsed status is not.
