An EPO (Exit Permit Only) is the formal cancellation of a limited or permanent stay permit, lodged with immigration when a foreigner leaves Indonesia for good. It closes the immigration record cleanly: the KITAS/ITAS or KITAP is cancelled, and the holder departs without an intention to return under that permit.

An EPO is generally required when:

• Employment ends and the work KITAS is being cancelled rather than transferred to a new sponsor
• An investor, retiree or dependant is leaving Indonesia permanently
• A stay permit is being switched to a different visa category in a way that requires cancellation of the old permit first

Why it matters: a stay permit left dangling — the holder simply flies out and lets the permit expire — can surface later as an obstacle: unresolved sponsor obligations, questions at the border on the next visit, or complications when applying for a new visa. A properly-lodged EPO prevents this.

Practical notes from our casework:

• The EPO is lodged by or through the sponsor, so cooperation between the departing foreigner and the sponsoring company matters; disputes with a former employer can complicate the process
• Where a foreigner is changing status (for example, from an investor KITAS to a work KITAS under a different sponsor), the sequencing of cancellation and new application is critical — done in the wrong order it can leave the applicant without valid status
• Whether a particular transition needs a full EPO or an in-country transfer depends on the permit types involved; this is worth confirming before acting
